HIKING, BIRDING, HORSEBACK TRAILS Mountains and indigenous forest make this an area of outstanding scenic beauty. A number of small mammals occur in the forests, and these include baboon, samango monkey, bushbuck and other small antelope. The birdlife is rich, and Cape parrot, Knysna lourie (turaco), chorister robin and crowned eagle may be observed. Location: South-central part of province; north of Fort Beaufort. Access: From Fort Beaufort follow the R67 northwards for approximately 25 km and then turn left onto the R351, following the signposts to Katberg. Accommodation: The Highlands/Katberg resort and Katberg Hotel lie just outside the Katberg State Forest and provide a variety of accommodation. Other facilities: Nature trails lasting between 1 and 4 hours; a hiking trail; horse-riding trails. Both the hotel and resort offer a wide variety of sporting activities, as well as fuel supplies and a shop that sells basic foodstuffs.
